Rotary Young Chef – Regional Final
The Rotary Young Chef aims to encourage young people to:
Develop Cookery Skills: Develop food presentation skills: Consider healthy eating options: Prove their organisation and planning skills: Prove their ability to cope in a demanding situation.
The competition is aimed at students in full time secondary education and aged 17 years or under on the 31st August 2011.
The Edinburgh School of Food and Wine was the venue on Sunday 18th March 2012 for the Regional Final, with 2 competitors from each of Districts 1010; 1020; 1030 and 1230 competing.
Contestants were asked to prepare a healthy 3 course meal for 2 persons, consisting of a starter, main course and dessert, with the cost of ingredients not exceeding £15.00
All the competitors impressed the judges, not only with their culinary skills, but also the imaginative choice of dishes and their compsure under pressure.
Judging the event were Iain Pirrie, proprietor of the Edinburgh School of Food and Wine, and Ian Potts, District 1020 RYC Co-ordinator and retired lecturer in hospitality management.
The winner was Emma Sturrock from Preston Lodge High School, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Longniddry. Her menu was:
Starter – Veloute of parsnip and apple with roasted chestnuts and parsnip crisps
Main Course - Steamed fillet of sea bass en papillote with carrots, leeks, garlic on crushed potatoes and watercress purée
Dessert - Tarté au citron with raspberry coulis
Trophies and certificates were presented to all the entrants by District 1020 DGE John Barbour, who thanked everybody for a successful event.
All the competitors received products from the main sponsor Filippo Berio, plus a selection of items from Baxters and an apron from McMillan Hotels.
Emma now goes forward to the RIBI National Final on Saturday 21st April 2012 at the WI Cookery School, Denham College, Marcham, Abingdon, Oxon.
