Home | What we are doing in District 1020 | Selkirk Rotakids

The Rotary Club of Selkirk has formed two new Rotakids groups which were recently presented with their Charter certificates by District Governor Keith.

This initiative has achieved the double dividend in that District now has four groups of young people developing their community skills.

Rotakids is a great opportunity to involve youngsters with Rotary ideals and community projects and these groups have already identified a selection of worthwhile activities that will not only challenge them but achieve objectives.

Rotakids from Lilliesleaf Primary School are aiming to feed the world — well at least the world of the senior citizens in the village!

As one of their projects, the group, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Selkirk, is planning to make good use of the school's garden and dig for school funds. Their plan is to grow and sell vegetables at the school's fayre and also deliver fresh produce to the pensioners of the village.

In preparation for this, Rotary organised a visit to Milestone Garden Centre at Newtown St Boswells to find out first hand about plants, seeds, fertilisers and pesticides. The Centre donated packets of seeds to the Rotakids and when the plots are prepared they have promised to provide fruit bushes to 'get them growing.'

Plant Manager Cal Gowdy showed the Rotakids around together with Rotarians John Pack and Herbert Chatters who are involved with the group's activities.

Rotakids meet each month at their  schools with their Rotary mentors to plan and deliver the group's activities. Other project include the collection of plastic milk container tops, funds from which will be donated to local causes, and a litter pick, proceeds of which will go to the STV Children's Appeal 2012.
