Ukraine Convoy 2012

This year due to lack of funds it has been impossible to make the usual two truck and 4x4 convoy to Uzhgorod, Ukraine  The 2011 trip involved three artics and more goods than ever before were taken. Much of this was used hospital beds which were obtained from Stafford hospital and for which there is a desperate need

One articulated vehicle leaves the UK through Hull this Thursday 31st May carrying a large quantity of consumables that will be out of date and therefore useless before the next planned usual trip. On board are also a considerable number of pathology lab items which have been kindly donated following the closure of the NHS lab in Morley nr Leeds.

This has been made possible by a small number of donations received during the last twelve months together with two recent donations from RC Holmfirth of £1400 for the ferry costs and £600 from RC Hebden Bridge which will part pay for some fuel.

The vehicle will be driven by a regular team member, Richard Deakin an Honorary member of RC Holmfirth who will be accompanied by a prospective Rotarian, his son Thomas aged 11! Once in Uzhgorod he will meet Brian Earley from the Rotary Club of Bassenthwaite in Cumbria, D1190 who is the team medical expert and an Honorary member of RC Uzhgorod Sala.  It is expected he will return to the UK on 8th June.

Funds are still desperately needed for this ongoing and very worthwhile project which continues to be undertaken by just four active members of this District – including new DG Keith.

We are told that many dozens of lives have been saved because of our efforts and those of supporters both in this District and D1190. The project is on going and we hope to raise funds after July 1st for the March 2013 Trip by contacting each Club individually, with a chance for someone to join the 2013 trip.

Details will be revealed at District handover, in the meantime there is a new presentation available for Clubs on the last 10 years work and this can be booked by contacting Rtn David Barnett on david@dnbarnett.ndo.co.uk

Update Sunday 3rd June

Arrived Hegyeshalom, Austro/Hungarian border  last night discovered Ukraine border is closed on Monday as it is Pentecost. Meal and a quick shower  and decided to carry on and cover more ground. Ran out of driving time at Hatvan halfway to the border and then learnt the fine for driving on a Sunday in Hungary is now  10,000 Euros!

Promised an escort through the border but it will have to be after 10.00 pm.
