Junior Youth Speaks

Kirkcudbright Rotary Club

The Rotary Club of Kirkcudbright hosted its annual Youth Speaks competition on the 30th of May. The competition is open to all primary school pupils in the surrounding area.

This year a large number of entrants performed to a high standard. Contestants spoke on their chosen subject and used IT to compliment their talk.

The daunting task of public speaking was enjoyed by an audience of parents, Rotarians and friends.

The judges deliberated for longer than usual this year, such was the high standard of talks, to determine the eventual winners. During this time the Kirkcudbright Primary school staff provided the nervous parents with tea, which was very much appreciated.

Anna Cooper of Borgue Primary, P7, received the Junior Youth Speaks Trophy, for her talk about “My Visit to Farnborough Air Show” the talk was illustrated by pictures of that visit. Katie Barnard of Kirkcudbright Primary, P5, received the Alex Caygill Trophy for her talk about “Deadliest Animals”. Katie categorized her animals in order of “deadliness” with accompanying photographs. In third place was Ben Houfe, Gatehouse Primary, P7, his talk on “How to deal with dangerous dogs” was accompanied by a toy dog which brought humour to his story.

Judges this year were Roger Jones, Hilary Irving and Sue Deshayes. The master of ceremonies Paul Campbell gave a vote of thanks to the contestants and appreciation to Kirkcudbright Primary School, the hosts for the evening.
