Young Musician District Final

Again a triumph for the young people of our District with amazing talent on show from our eight finalists: six instrumentalists and two singers performed excellently for trophies and certificates.

“Outstanding Evening” says Lord Lieutenant

Once again, Lord Petre, Lord Lieutenant for Essex, was the principal Guest of Honour at the District Young Musician competition, in Chelmsford Cathedral on 14 February. Six instrumentalists and two singers performed excellently for trophies and certificates.

Young Musician of the Year was Stephen Payne (sponsored by the Rotary Clubs in Havering), whose performance on the French Horn was described by chairman of the adjudicators, Patrick McCarthy, as “well-nigh flawless”. Runner-up was Paul Armitage  (Colchester), whose piano playing Patrick said assured him of a great career.

Singer of the Year was Fleur Sumption (Chelmsford), with a varied selection of songs; Runner-up was Abbie Gunnell (South Woodham Ferrers), performing two show songs. All four of these exciting youngsters will go forward to represent District 1240 at the Regional competition on 22 March, at St. Faith’s College Cambridge.
