CENTENARY GALA DINNER

Rotary celebrates a Century of Service above Self

The Rotary Club of Leeds was elected to membership of the British Association of Rotary Clubs on May 8 1916 and next year celebrates its 100th Birthday.
The occasion will be marked by a Charity Dinner at the Queens Hotel Leeds on May 11 2016. The surplus from the Dinner and its associated activities will be donated to Candlelighters - Yorkshire’s Children’s Cancer Charity - click here.
The money raised will be used for funding holidays for seriously ill children and their families, bringing a little light into their devastated lives.
Candlelighters is one of many local charities and projects, supported by the Rotary Club of Leeds. Other charities, which have benefited recently are:
-  St George’s Crypt
-  Leeds Children’s Charity
-  Sight Savers
-  The Market Place
-  Lord Mayor’s Lego Appeal
-  Sue Ryder (Wheatfields)
-  Spinal Muscular Atrophy Support UK
-  Action for the Blind
Internationally, the Club contributes to disaster relief efforts, an example being the recent earthquake in Nepal, the END POLIO NOW campaign - click here - and is currently working on a project to bring clean water to a previously built maternity unit in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Every year, the Club sets up a stall in central Leeds and invites passers-by to have their blood pressure checked by a nurse. This initiative saves lives by referring people, with abnormally high pressures, to either A&E or their GP.
To commemorate a centenary of service to local and international communities, the Rotary Club of Leeds is producing a 100th Anniversary Souvenir Brochure. 1000 copies will be distributed to the 79 Rotary Clubs across Yorkshire and Humberside. Local businesses are invited to advertise their goods and services and simultaneously to benefit Candlelighters Children’s Cancer Charity.
Tickets are available to non-Rotarians - click here for contact details - who would like to join us at the Gala Centenary Dinner on May 11 2016, to celebrate our birthday and to learn more about the world-wide activities of the Rotary movement.
QUOTE FROM CANDLELIGHTERS
“We are delighted to have been chosen by the Rotary Club of Leeds as one of the charities they support in their Centenary Year. It is only through the continued support of our local community that Candlelighters is able to provide help to families living with cancer, right across Yorkshire. When you have a child diagnosed with cancer, it can be difficult to plan a much needed break. The funds raised from this event will enable Candlelighters to provide holidays for families where a child has had a cancer diagnosis.”
