Conference 2016 News

When planning the theme for this year’s conference we came across the World Health Organisation concept of health as being a state of physical, mental and social wellbeing. This seemed in accord with the aims of Rotary International as evidenced in so many ways; the End Polio Now campaign, improving health care in underdeveloped countries, water aid schemes, education and the numerous local initiatives to assist the ill, the disabled and the disadvantaged. Our theme thereby evolved.

Health and Wellbeing

in the widest sense. It will not be a “medical “conference. The speakers are from a wide range of backgrounds (only two are doctors of medicine) representing initiatives at local, national and international levels. All are concerned with promoting wellbeing.

Dr Sally Magnusson the well-known broadcaster and writer will describe her experiences of caring for a loved one with dementia and how she then founded the charity Playlist for Life. Sally will also have a book signing of “Where Memories Go: Why Dementia Changes Everything”

Jill Young Chief Executive Officer of the Golden Jubilee National Hospital will outline some significant research and major innovations in health care effecting the whole of Scotland and beyond.

Dr Carol Davidson Director of Public Health. NHS Ayrshire and Arran will give us ten tips for health and an insight into health improvement and health promotion.

The theme will then spread out.

Professor Pamela Gillies CBE Principal and Vice Chancellor. Glasgow Caledonian University will describe some of the award winning initiatives she has lead and promoted to tackle educational, health and social issues.

Rotary in Action. Clubs from District 1230 will highlight four very innovative projects.

The international dimension will be covered by:-

Dr Craig Russell Consultant Plastic Surgeon who will speak on his work with the Northern Cleft Foundation which repairs cleft lips and palates among the poor and disadvantaged of India.

Helen Young Dental Surgeon and Clinical Lead will outline vital dental pain relief work and training of health workers undertaken by Bridge2Aid Tanzania.

Finally we will return nearer home.

Dr Waiyin Hatton Former Chief Executive. NHS Ayrshire and Arran and founder of Ayrshire Sportsabilty will convey how this promotes the education and wellbeing of children and adults with physical, sensory or learning disabilities through sport.

Eve Conway President Rotary GB&I will be our final speaker. We are delighted and honoured that she will grace our conference and we look forward to her address to us.

It is not however all work and no play. After Dinner entertainment will be by the Johnstone Phoenix Theatre Group and their songs from the musicals. And all of this will take place in the magnificent setting of the Golden Jubilee Conference Hotel; a four star hotel and the only Scottish member of the UK’s Conference Centres of Excellence.

It is beautifully appointed and has a lovely location on the banks of the River Clyde. It also has excellent leisure facilities but we assure you that despite the conference theme attendance at the Health Club is not obligatory. Revenue from the Conference will go to promoting and supporting services at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital; thereby we will be contributing to “Health and Wellbeing”.

So there you have it and we hope you will have it. Your Club Secretary has our Conference Flyer leaflet, the final draft of the programme and most importantly the Registration Form which is also on the District Website. Given the quality of the programme and the venue we believe that the old adage “Book early to avoid disappointment” is very appropriate. So get your booking in ASAP

See you there.
Kindest regards
