The Civil War Comes to Oswestry to Help The Tree of Light 2016

Sat, Sep 17th 2016 at 11:00 am- Sun, Sep 18th 2016 - 3:00 pm

Mike Jones needs our help to run a Rotary Stall for the Tree of Light when the renowned Sealed Knot re-enactment organisation set up a traditional camp in Cae Glas Park on the 17th and 18th of September 2016.

A 200 strong Sealed Knot garrison will demonstrate traditional living, musket firing and organised marches through the Oswestry itself and a battle planned on Saturday afternoon in Cae Glas Park.

The violence of the Civil Wars between King Charles 1st and his Parliament was the crucible that forged how Britain would be ruled.

Come to Cae Glas Park on Saturday 17th September and see how the soldiers lived and fought. Look out for the Musketeers and Pikemen of the time period who will battle for control of the town. Experience the living history encampment which will show how the civilian camp followers cared for their loved ones.

At 11am a garrison will march through the town and later you can witness their muskets firing and see the clash of arms as the two armies meet in the park.

Feel free to then talk to the re-enactors about this fascinating period of our history. A recruiting sergeant will be about the field to sign up all those willing to take up arms for the cause. This brand new free family event will prove to be one of the highlights of year and should prove to be both exciting and informative.

The Rotary Club's Tree of Light organiser Mike Jones has been given permission to have a stall during the weekend where he will promote Rotary and sell toy swords and shields in aid of the Tree of Light Appeal 2016.  He needs our help!

"I have the chance of a pitch at Cae Glas Park on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th September, 11am - 3pm, when the Sealed Knot will perform an English civil war re-enactment.

This will be another chance for money to be raised for Tree of Light and also Rotary working for the community.  I will put up a stall selling sets of swords and shields and for every set that we sell £2 will go to Tree of Light, I know that some of you will say that they did not use these weapons in that battle but never the less at events like this the sets sell well.

I know that this is a busy time for Rotary what with Life Line, Community Games etc but we must make hay while the sun shines!

Mike Jones"
