Records tumble for Cardiff Bay
To coincide with the Rio Paralympics, attendees tried out 30 disabled sports at the National Indoor arena at Cardiff Met University, beating the previous record by 200.
The event started 13 years ago but faced a crisis in 2007 when major sponsors pulled out which could have led with the showcase for disabled sports being cancelled.
Cardiff Bay Rotary saved the day by stepping in with sponsorship of £4,000. Continuous sponsorship of a similar amount each year has ensured thousands of young disabled people have discovered their talents for the first time at this event. Some of these athletes are today competing for GB Paralympics and are hopeful of gold medal or two in Rio.
Pippa Britton, Chair of Disability Sport Wales says "I would like to thank our Community Partner Arriva Trains Wales, Cardiff Bay Rotary and our other partners for supporting this event which has now become an important date in the Disability Sport Wales calendar. Over the years many thousands of people have benefitted from this event by being introduced to new sports and clubs, which they have gone on to join. Many of the sports we showcase are excellent examples of inclusive activity while others offer the opportunity to engage Paralympic or disability specific programmes. It is important we continue to keep the profile of disability sport high on everyone's agenda in Wales. This event ticks all the right boxes, ensuring we maximise opportunities for disabled people to get hooked on sport for life."
