Community Initiative to raise funds towards providing 'Night Time' landing lights in Dawlish for Devon Air Ambulance.
November was the Rotary Club of Dawlish month at the
Charity Bingo night held at the Langstone Cliff Hotel. The evening was very
well attended. During the evening club secretary Colin Timms explained that the
club had resolved to support the Community Initiative to provide a night time
landing site in Dawlish for Devon Air Ambulance. Dawlish Football Club had
generously provided the landing site and the landing lights, the final piece of
the jigsaw was the switching gear which would allow the pilots to switch on the
lights, the approximate cost of this being £1000.00. Colin confirmed that the
proceeds of the draw and raffle would be utilised to fund the installation of
the switching gear. The incredible generosity of those present generated a
grand total of £1220. Pictured are President Gary Hook (left) and Community
Chair Stuart Dawson (right) presenting the winners of draw, first prize Shirley
Smith £50.00 and second prize Michele Holman an oven ready turkey to be
delivered in time for Christmas.
The switch gear was installed early December and is now live. The system is fully operational, all thanks to Dawlish Town Football Club, allowing their ground to be used for 'night-time landing'. This has all been made possible by the members of The Rotary Club of Dawlish via the Langstone Cliff Hotel Charity Bingo Night.
Devon Air Ambulance pilots are able to turn the landing lights on remotely from their aircraft and the system was used for the first time on the night of the 15th December 2016.
