Information and Tips

When considering how to use this with schools, you can use this with your one Primary School contact or use the tips here to make contact with one Primary School:

  • Background: Schools have very little time in the curriculum to do hands on learning and discovery with children, but of course children love this approach. Teacher training provides very little time to help learn how to manage Design and Technology or Science practicals in the classroom.
  • Most schools are keen to have help with offering practical enrichment days or clubs
  • Some schools will recognise the term STEM and be keen to have help enriching their STEM learning (Science, Technology Engineering and Maths), you could refer to STEM learning in your contact with them.
  • The resources here suit children in Key Stage 2 at school, (KS2) so you might send letters to the KS2 Lead or Head of KS2 as well as the Headteacher.
  • If you want to work with year 6 (10-11s) it would need to be AFTER the SAT tests in May each year. Year 4 and 5 children (8-10 year olds) don¬ít have big exams or testing so it is easier to ask to work with them at any time.
  • Of course this material could be used with a local community group/club like Guides and Scouts or home school group, not just in schools.
  • Schools may have slots booked in for enrichment days or for clubs, so you could ask if they already have dates/days in mind.
  • This tournament works as a whole enrichment day, two half sessions or as a club in 4 twilights, so have a range of ways to offer this enrichment opportunity.
  • You can do the tournament as a standalone challenge, but the children may not have the prior learning needed to be very creative with their designs. It may also be questionable how much they would learn from this short standalone challenge.
  • At no time should you have to offer the pre tasks or tournament without a member of staff present (a teacher or teaching assistant)
  • The school will have a safer recruitment policy and safeguarding policy you will have to follow to be able to work in their school with the children. This might include requesting you get a DBS check and requesting references. They may be happy to accept a current DBS check from another role you do. A way for parental permissions for photographs (to be taken and used) would also need to be agreed with the Headteacher.

National Curriculum Mapping:

Schools have to ensure that the National Curriculum Programmes of Study are covered in their teaching for each year group. Junior TT helps teachers cover these programmes of Study:

Design & Technology:

The whole concept of the Technology Tournaments is design process in action: situation, brief, analysis, research, designing, modelling and testing. In terms of the Specific National Curriculum Programmes of Study, Junior TT specifically supports:

KS2 (8-11 year olds): Design, Make and Technical knowledge criteria

Maths: In the Maths Curriculum, the four criteria Junior TT supports are

KS2 (8-11 year olds): 'number and place value', 'addition and subtraction', 'measurement', 'Geometry' and 'properties of shapes'.

Science: In the Science Curriculum, the four criteria Junior TT supports are: 'Living things and their habitats', 'uses of everyday materials', 'properties and changes of materials' and 'forces':

KS2 (7-11 year olds) : 'Living things and their habitats', 'Properties and changes of materials' and 'Forces'
