District Outdoor Bowls Gala

Rotarians compete on a sunny day

The District Outdoor Bowls gala was held at Bushey Bowls Club on Thursday 28th September, organised by Ken Edmonds of the Amwell Club, last year’s winners. On a glorious sunny day the eight triple teams played five matches each to determine which two should be in the final. After some good bowling with both close and surprising results the final was contested by the two teams from Amersham, with the Blues winning 5 – 3. The Fred Butt trophy and bottles of wine were presented by District Governor Cheryl, who promised to try bowls at the Indoor District Gala on April 26th next year at Luton Bowling Club.

Our thanks to the Bushey Bowls Club and Neville Brant (ex Bushey Rotarian) for all their support to the event.

The Bowls Tournament was started about 30 years ago by Fred Butt of the Luton Club. It has changed in format over time and is now a one day gala where teams play 5 games of 50 minutes or 5/6 ends. Following Fred’s death the gala format was introduced in 2004 by Neville and John Fox of the Amersham Club. The gala days can take up to 12 triples, so any clubs interested should look out for info in January about the indoor gala or contact Ken Edmonds at Amwell.
