For the second time, local veterinary surgeon John Hickerton is to become President of North Wales oldest Rotary club, Rhyl. Having served as President in 2004 and currently the Senior Vice-president, he was unanimously elected at a special general meeting at Faenol Fawr to again hold the club’s highest office and will formally be installed at next year’s annual meeting. Succeeding him as Senior Vice-President will be Gareth Davies while other officers elected unopposed are Treasurer John P Williams and Secretary Gordon Marshall. In a detailed preview of the remaining programme planned for the rest of his year in office, President Keith Roberts announced a number of ambitious ideas, including a Rotary Day dinner in February, a major Cash Prize draw for Christmas 2018, a combined Plant Fair and Car Boot Sale at Trefnant Village Hall in May, a novel Saturday all-family Brunch at Faenol Fawr in early February and an innovative Charter Night celebration dinner at Tweedmill in May. Community Service chairman Hari Hughes confirmeed that plans to provide another free holiday for a group of elderly gentlemen in the new year were proceeding while Vocational Secretary Mike Howarth said a wide-ranging list of attractive trips and visits was being actively explored, including a return to the popular Bangor-on-Dee Races in April as well as a special tour of the giant Airbus plant at Broughton in August. Guest visitor Assistant District Governor Terry Bolton of Ruthin who was warmly welcomed by the President, said he had been tremendously impressed by both the diversity of the future programme that had been outlined and also the warm and friendly atmosphere he had witnessed. “You are clearly a great club with a superb spirit and I can only wish you continued success to go on enjoying yourselves and having fun,” he added. The next meeting of the club will be on Tuesday November 21 when the guest speaker will be Father Roger Dawson.
