Leighton Buzzard schools take part in local Youth Speaks competition

Students from five Leighton Buzzard schools took part in the recent Rotary Youth Speaks, public speaking competition sponsored and organised by the Rotary Club of Leighton Linslade. The competition took place at Vandyke Upper School and included teams from Gilbert Inglefield, Brooklands, Linslade, Cedars and Vandyke schools.

Presentations were made on a wide range of subjects covering topics such as footballer’s wages and animal welfare, to life without terror and extreme sports. The winning team in the younger, Intermediate category was from Linslade School speaking on the subject of artificial intelligence and a team from Cedars won the Senior category with a presentation on saving the world’s oceans. Eleven teams of three gave eminently competent presentations in front of an audience of some 50 attendees in a hotly contested, local heat and the winners will now go through to the next stage of the competition.

“The competition Judges were impressed by the high standard of entries and the presentation skills of all the teams taking part and it was very difficult to choose winners from the two categories,” stated Liz Zinnbauer, Chair of Youth Services. “The winning teams both received certificates and gift tokens and all participants were awarded certificates of achievement.
