Charity swim at Spennymoor Leisure Centre

Swimathon is a sponsored swim held annually at Spennymoor Leisure centre on the second Sunday in May.
It is organised by a committee formed from the Rotary Clubs of Bishop Auckland, Newton Aycliffe, Sedgefield and Spennymoor and the Lions’ Club of Darlington.
The event has been running since 1982 and has raised over £300,000 for local and national charities and good causes.
The format is that teams of up to six swimmers swim in relay across the pool for 55 minutes on the hour every hour from 9.00am until 5.00pm. There is room for seven teams for every session which means that there is space for 56 teams in the event
This year the “headline charity” is “Great North Air Ambulance Service”. Every team can nominate a charity/good cause to benefit from half of the money raised by that team and the other half of the money raised goes into the pot to make the donation to the "headline charity"
There are trophies to award for the number of widths swam and the amount of money raised in sponsorship for both adults and juniors.  A presentation night is held in September at Low Spennymoor W.M.C. when the headline charity receives their cheque and the winners of the trophies receive them
If you would like to enter a team and nominate your charity/good cause we would be delighted and will gladly supply you with an Entry Form.  This is a very enjoyable and worthwhile event which has benefitted many charities and good causes for many years and hopefully will continue to do so for many years to come.
