Thurrock's Answer to Jamie Oliver - Sasha Martin from Gateway Academy wins the District Heat
In November last year the Rotary Club of Grays Thurrock held its ‘Young Chef’ competition at the South Essex College (SEC). The competition was open to all schools in the borough of Thurrock. At the end of the event the Graeme Collie from the SEC announced that Sasha Martin had won the competition. As part of the winners prise the SEC agreed to meet with Sasha and offer some extra tuition which certainly helped at the regional finals.
Last Saturday the Rotary District 1240 (Essex) held its regional finals to find the best chef in the county. This competition was open to the winners of local heats held in the county and we asked our winner if she would represent all the schools in Thurrock. We are very pleased that not only did she say yes she then went on to win the competition. Sasha Martin from the Gateway Academy now goes onto the regional finals representing not only all Thurrock schools and our Rotary club but the Essex district of Rotary. The competition required Sasha to prepare a three course meal within a set budget. A comment made by the judge, who is the chef at the County Hotel Chelmsford was “her contribution was outstanding”. Rotarian Corin Whymark who attended the event said “he was surprised at the very high standard of the food produced and was delighted to see that Sasha had risen to the occasion by winning the competition – “well done Sasha”.
