Young Musician District final 2018

The District final of the 2018 Young Musician Competition was held at Islwyn High School on March 10th
The afternoon audience were treated to performances by
outstanding instrumental and vocal competitors.

The District final of the 2018 Young Musician Competition was held at Islwyn High School on March 10th. The afternoon audience were treated to performances by eight outstanding instrumental competitors. The standard achieved by the competitors, ranging in age from fourteen to eighteen, was nothing short of brilliant. It was a very enjoyable experience listening to a mix of classical and contemporary music being performed with such confidence and maturity on a variety of instruments including saxophone, harp, trombone, flute and piano.

The three adjudicators, Dr Daniel Bickerton, Cheryl Robson and James Davies had a very difficult task and took some time to come to their decision. The feedback given to competitors by Daniel Bickerton was very specific and gave many good pointers to enable competitors to improve their performance.

The winner was 18 year old harpist Eve Price sponsored by the RC’s of Aberdare, Llantrisant and Rhondda. Runner up was flautist Samuel Finch sponsored by the RC of Porthcawl.

During the evening a small but very appreciative audience were treated to an outstanding competition by the eight vocal finalists. There was an interesting mix classical, traditional and musical theatre music performed. The standard of performance was very high with each competitor showing a level of technical skill and competence singing a range of difficult and challenging pieces.

The three adjudicators, Stephen Bard, Paul Cook, and Jayne Williams were certainly given a difficult task when it came to deciding on the winner.

The winner was 14 year old John Rhys Liddington sponsored by RC Pontllanfraith who certainly captured the audience with the brilliance of his accurate and emotive performance.

Runner up was 18 year old Manon Ogwen-Parry sponsored by the RC of Cardiff Bay

The organisers would like to thank the Head Teacher of Islwyn High School for their support in organising this competition.

The two winners will now proceed to the Regional Final being held at Islwyn High School on April 22nd starting at 2pm.
