An intercultural learning adventure for 7-11 year olds.

In association with the Manchester International Society, the Foundation and International Committee of the Rotary Club of Stockport Lamplighter implemented the second “RocketWorld” project in St John’s C of E Primary School in Heaton Mersey, Stockport on Tuesday 17 April 2018. The “RocketWorld” project is an intercultural learning adventure for 7-11 year olds. It aims to enrich the curriculum of primary school children, broaden their horizons and encourage language learning.

Volunteers from six countries (Chile, India, the Netherlands, South Korea, Sweden, and Venezuela) led the workshop activities. They used their laptops, artefacts and their nations’ flags to explain to the children in Years 2, 3, 4 and 5 the geography, the customs and the culture of their countries. A giant inflatable Earth with NASA satellite imagery was exhibited in the school hall. Children participated in several activities.

Joan Ebbrell (Rotary Club of Stockport Lamplighter) worked with the volunteers and helped with children’s “RocketWorld” activities. Najib Yousif and John Palmer (Rotary Club of Stockport Lamplighter) made a brief visit to the school and spoke with the headteacher (Mr Patrick Rayner), the children, the volunteers and teachers.

Mr Rayner spoke highly of the experience and knowledge the children acquired from the international volunteers and was very appreciative of the contribution made by the Rotary Club of Stockport Lamplighter in financing the project.

Acknowledgement to John Palmer who took the photographs.
