Local charities win from quiz

Letchworth Howard rasie a record £1,400 at their annual quiz

There was no question about the winners at Letchworth Howard Rotary Club’s annual partners’ quiz on Saturday April 21st – the charities that will benefit from the record £1,400 raised from the event.

A packed St George’s Church Hall, Letchworth Garden City, saw over 100 people pit their knowledge across a wide range of subjects from the topical to the arcane, with questions set by Honorary Rotarian Dorothy Harrison while Quizmaster Colin Green, former club president, ruled over proceedings with a good-natured rod of iron.

“The evening was certainly boisterous and at times close to being rowdy,” Colin commented.

A raffle contributed £245 to the net proceeds, and the evening included an excellent supper.

The principal beneficiaries from the event are HomeStart Hertfordshire, which provides crucial help to families with young children, and Letchworth’s Garden House Hospice.

One sad note at the event was news of the death earlier that day of Letchworth Howard president Dave Glanville’s father-in-law, Bill, a few weeks short of his 100th birthday. Bill was well-known to Rotarians as a stalwart of the club’s annual poppy-selling sessions for the Royal British Legion, and five years ago undertook a sponsored swim that raised a substantial sum for HomeStart.
