Ten teams took part in the competition with Laurencekirk providing 3 teams.
The Rotary Club of Laurencekirk and District held their annual Primary Schools 7-a-Side Football competition on the evening of Thursday 14th June on the old playing fields of Mearns Academy. 3, 7-a-side football pitches had been marked out on the ground for the competition.
Ten teams took part in the competition with Laurencekirk providing 3 teams. Inverbervie had 2 teams, as did St Cyrus, whilst Glenbervie, and Gourdon had one team each. Caterline and Kinneff combined to provide one team called “Catkins”.
Mearns Youth Football Club provided the referees for the evening, as well as providing burgers, hot dogs, cakes, teas and coffees at their “refreshment stall”.
A substantial crowd of enthusiastic supporters cheered on their respective teams in a very friendly manner and witnessed a very high standard of football with many individuals showing a tremendous level of skill in their ball control and distribution of their passes.
A total of 84 goals were scored throughout the evening with the final goal being a “Golden” goal during the final match between Laurencekirk A team, and Gourdon. The match ended with both teams on level terms, and the final resumed until a Golden goal was scored. Gourdon duly scored and lifted the trophy.
Club President Peter Myles presented the trophy to the winning Gourdon team, and thanked Mearns Youth Football Club for all the hard work and assistance they had put in to make the evening such a success.
