Howard Hughes, of Kemnay, won the Scottish Rotary Angling Cup at Lake of Monteith earlier this week.
Competing against 20 anglers from the Borders to Highland, he came out top, in both of the two legs held, to be a clear winner against the 2017 champion from Stirling. This is a repeat of his 2016 win. Because of illness he had to drop out of the 2017 competition.
In June, 10 boats with two fishers took to the water for 7 hours. One fisher selects the section of Lake in the morning, with the other taking the afternoon session. Howard says “It was so hot overhead, and the water being warm, the fish were deep down in June”. Despite difficult conditions, he still took 6 fish, one ahead of his nearest rival. This week, with cooler conditions, he selected a dry fly, which was a wise move. He again finished with 9 fish well clear of the second in the competition.
Howard hopes to defend his title next year.
