YOUTH SPEAKS COMPETITION 2019

The effects of Sir David Attenborough’s “Blue Planet” series has certainly struck a chord with the young members of Plympton’s community with pollution and especially ocean pollution being a theme of several of the competing teams at the Plympton Rotary heat of the Rotary Youth Speaks Competition held at Boringdon Park Golf Club on the 17^th January.  As Head Judge Peter Reid remarked, the planet will be in safe hands when these children are in charge as adults!

But this was not the only topic with debates also being held on subjects such as “Are computers more intelligent than the people who use them?” and “Life is an Escape Room”, which were not only informative but very entertaining.   

Linda Bertram was in charge in organising this local heat which is one of the many youth competitions run by Rotary in Great Britain & Ireland.  She said that “this speaking competition in particular covers a wide range of skills, including performance, presentation, the gathering of their ideas on topical subjects and then delivering them within a time limit.  This is no mean feat whatever your age and many of these youngsters put some of us Rotarians to shame”.

The winners of this local heat where: Boringdon “A” in the junior category who spoke on “Ocean Pollution”, Heles “A” on “Are Computers More Intelligent that the People who Use them?” in the Intermediate category and the winners of the Senior category where Heles “B” who spoke on “Life is an Escape Room”.

The teams now progress on to the Plymouth Area final due to take place in February and hopefully will then go on to the District and maybe National finals.  Plympton Rotary know that all of the teams will do the club proud.
