District Young Chef Final 2019
On the 5th February Seven Young Chefs (as 1 Young Chef was ill) from across District 1040 competed in the District Final at Betty’s Cookery School in Harrogate.
The Young Chefs have to produce a three-course healthy meal on a limited budget of £20 within a two-hour time frame. Marks are awarded for a number of skills from choice of menu, planning, hygiene, to the taste and presentation of the meal. The standards of cooking and presentation were of a very high standard. The judges were Jenny Culver and Chris Taylor from Betty’s Cookery School.
Alex Calvert, aged 14, from Beverley sponsored by the Rotary club of Weighton Wolds, was the winner and will now compete in the Regional Final in Peterborough on the 23rd March. Alex’s menu was a starter of Beer Battered Haddock Goujon with a potato and caper salad , followed by a main course of Local Pan Roast Duck Breast with braised puy lentils with root vegetables and tender stem broccoli and a citrus reduction. Dessert was a Chocolate and Raspberry Roulade
The runners up were Jessica Ellwood age 16 sponsored by the Rotary club of Cleethorpes, Lucy Atkinson age 15 sponsored by the Rotary club of Northallerton Mowbray and Sannah Nazim age 14 sponsored by the Rotary club of Bradford .
The winner and the runners up will all now compete in the Regional final
The standard of cooking was very high again and all the young people did themselves and their sponsoring Rotary clubs proud. All competitors received a certificate and a Young chef apron, the winner’s trophy was presented by District Governor Elect Manoj Joshi .
The National Rotary Young Chef competition final, sponsored by Filippo Berio, will be held on the 27th April at Leeds City College .This will be the first time District 1040 have hosted the National competition and this will showcase the District and the Rotarians who support the competition .
