Crocuses bring colour to Plymouth City garden
The City Jigsaw Garden at Drake Circus teemed with volunteers on Saturday 16thOctober who busily planted 4,100 crocus bulbs!
Environmental charity, Groundwork, had been approached by local Rotary Clubs to support their ‘Focus on the Crocus’ campaign. Rotary International has a campaign to eradicate polio and the purple crocus symbolises the purple dye put on the children’s little finger to show they have been immunised.
The City Jigsaw Garden was created through a partnership of Marks and Spencer Plan A Greener Living Spaces project, Groundwork South West, the University of Plymouth, Kandahar and the Plymouth City Centre Company.
The bulb planting was undertaken by Rotary Club members of the Plympton, Roborough, Plymouth Albion and Plymouth Mayflower clubs, Groundwork, and young volunteers from the UPSU (Volunteers in Plymouth), Plymouth Environmental Action, Moor Trees and Mutant Labs. The 4,100 crocus bulbs will create a fantastic display next Spring when the garden will erupt in a mass of purple.
Rupert Goddard, Groundwork South West, Project Manager said: The Jigsaw Garden is providing a canvas on which volunteers from across the City come together to ‘Focus on the Crocus’ and raise awareness of issues in the developing world.
Darren Hands, Assistant Governor and member of the Plympton Rotary Club said Rotary has been involved in this fight against Polio for just over 25 years and we are now so close to finally eradicating it for good. We are extremely pleased Groundwork has agreed to help us maintain awareness of our campaign for this final push.
