Pupils Explore Black Holes

from all over Britain will gather in the world-famous Faraday
Theatre of the Royal Institution, London at the culmination
of a true adventure in scientific discovery. After months
of careful research using a cutting-edge professional telescope,

The Rotary Club of Seaford in East Sussex have teamed up
with Parker Pens to produce and offer for sale high quality

Coping when Someone has Died CD-ROM on Friday 23 April.

which are available, FREE, to all schools throughout the
UK and Ireland.

& Collectors Centennial Envelope Celebrates 100 Years

of Newtownabbey has designed and produced an attractive
commemorative envelope. The envelopes will be franked and
posted from Chicago on 23 February 2005. The cost per envelope

to Celebrate a Century of Service

in Great Britain and Ireland are making plans to celebrate
a century of service to their communities. The first Rotary
Club was founded by Paul Harris in Chicago, USA on 23rd
February 1905. Ever since, Rotary’s work has spanned
the globe, with clubs in 166 countries and a membership
of 1.2 million business men and women.

on fact finding mission to Malawi

The
daily struggle to find safe drinking water in Malawi has
been seen first-hand by Rotarians Ian Black and Neil Rorie.
Ian and Neil, who have voluntarily fundraised for WaterAid
for many years, have just returned from their visit to Malawi
for two weeks with WaterAid. With crumbling water infrastructure
and widespread disease, Malawi is a long way from home in
Hedgerley, Bucks for Ian and Fleet, Hampshire for Neil.

International in Great Britain and Ireland’s Stroke
Awareness Campaign has won a prestigious Institute of Public
Relations IPR PRide Award 2003/4 for Best Charity or Non-Profit
Campaign. The award was presented, on February 12th at a
gala awards dinner at the Runnymede Hotel, Egham, to Judith
Diment of JD PR who managed the public relations programme
on behalf of Rotary.

WORLD SENDS RELIEF TO VICTIMS OF IRAN QUAKE

clubs across the world are rallying to the aid of the victims
of the devastating earthquake that flattened Bam, Iran,
on the night of 26 December 2003. More than 30,000 residents
of the 2,000-year-old city were killed and some 80,000 left
homeless by the disaster.

Ian is travelling to Malawi for two weeks with the charity

in Hedgerley, Buckinghamshire.

World Records has confirmed that Rotary International in
Great Britain & Ireland and The Stroke Association have
been successful in setting a new Guinness World Record for
the number of blood pressure readings taken in one day.
The official announcement coincides with the start of National
Blood Pressure Testing Week and comes two weeks before The
Stroke Association’s annual Stroke Awareness Week
which starts on Monday 29 September.

International will be celebrating 100 years of service in
the year 2005. As part of that celebration, Rotary clubs
are organising children’s poster contests for children
age 10-13. One winner selected from each participating Rotary
club will be entered into a Rotary district competition.

JARS OF MARMALADE TO HELP ROTARY RAISE $1 MILLION

jars of marmalade donated by Wilkin & Sons in Tiptree,
have been distributed to Rotarians in Great Britain &
Ireland to help them raise $1 million for the Rotary Foundation.
Wilkin & Sons, the world famous manufacturers of preserves
has given Rotary the specially commissioned Spread and Save
marmalade with a sponsorship retail value in the region
of £100,000. Rotary members will donate £1 for
each jar and when the jar is empty they will fill it with
small change (20p coins are suggested) during the next 12
months.

LAUNCHES PARTNERSHIP WITH ASSOCIATION OF CHILDREN’S
HOSPICES

Rotary
International in Great Britain and Ireland announced today
that it will be working in partnership with the Association
of Children’s Hospices (ACH) to offer Rotary support
to the children’s hospice movement throughout these
islands. The Association will benefit from Rotarians providing
hands on help to all 43 of their member children’s
hospices organisations as well as fund raising initiatives
throughout the next year. The partnership was launched by
Fiona Phillips of GMTV at Richard House Children’s
Hospice in London.

PRESIDENT OF ROTARY HIGHLIGHTS NEW OPPORTUNITIES FOR HUMANITARIAN
SERVICE AT HOME AND ABROAD

The
new President of Rotary International in Great Britain and
Ireland is Brian Stoyel from Plymouth. On July 1st he became
the leader of some 59,000 Rotarians who belong to 1,835
clubs in Great Britain and Ireland. Brian’s priorities
for the next twelve months are the children’s hospices
movement at home, and two overseas projects in Tanzania
and Uganda. In 2003/2004 Rotary clubs will be asked to focus
on these three new areas of support: Association of Children’s
Hospices; Rotarians Eliminating Malaria in Tanzania and
Rotaract Overseas Projects, in Tanzania to construct a community
centre, and in Uganda to build a School Clinic.

ANNOUNCES NEW PRORAMME TO COMBAT MALARIA IN TANZANIA

Rotary
International in Britain and Ireland announces today a new
programme which aims to eliminate malaria in Tanzania. The
programme - Rotarians Eliminating Malaria in Tanzania –
will raise funds for equipment, education and research.
Malaria is one of the biggest killers in the world today.
At least 300 million people contract malaria every year,
of whom over one million children will die and approximately
90% of these deaths will be in Africa.
