Email Forwarding and Web Site Addresses

A system has been provided for standard email addresses for all District and Club Officers together with associated web site addresses for club web sites. In this system the District has a special Internet "domain" and each Club has its own domain within this. These addresses have the advantage of remaining stable and consistent as well as having a more professional appearance. They are easier to write down and remember than the sometimes complicated personal addresses that may otherwise be used.

District 1170 uses the Internet domain rotary1170.org and each club's Internet domain is based on the name of the club combined with this, like [clubname].rotary1170.org so an example might be exeter.rotary1170.org. In the District handbooks the Internet domain for each club is shown along with their other details. In most cases it will be the name of the club with spaces removed but there are some exceptions because of the rules that limit what may appear in a domain name, e.g. the "&" symbol is not allowed.

Email Forwarding

The special Internet domains are used to form standard email addresses for District and Club Officers that will remain the same even if the Officer or his/her personal email changes.

Email addresses are provided for each Officer in the District and in each Club. These are formed by adding the name of the office and an "@" symbol to the front of the Internet domain, so in our Club example the President's email address would be president@exeter.rotary1170.org. As some of the offices have rather long names, and because spaces aren't allowed in email addresses, the name of the office as used in the email address is sometimes abbreviated. For District officers you just use the name of the office with the District's domain, e.g. the District Governor would be dg@rotary1170.org.

Here are lists of the names used to form email addresses for District and Club Officers. 0000 refers to your district number. You can use these lists, along with the District Internet domain or the Internet domain shown against each club, to find a suitable email address for any Officer in the District.

Web Site Addresses

The standard web site address (or URL) for a club is formed by simply adding www. to the front of the Internet domain, so in our example it would be www.exeter.rotary1170.org. For brevity it is also possible to use the Internet domain on its own as a web site address, without the www, eg exeter.rotary1170.org. The same rule applies to the web site for the district, so the district web address is www.rotary1170.org or rotary1170.org.

When one of these web site addresses is entered into a web browser the system will automatically redirect the viewer to the website created using the RIBI Template web site system.
