Lunchtime Meeting - 12.45pm - Speaker M Liquorish

Mon, Apr 24th 2017 at 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm

Today Mark will talk to us on the intriguing subject of 20th Century Icons. What does he mean?

20th Century Icons? Today Mark let us into the world of some of his interests - stamp collecting and photography.

Since 1952, the definitive postage stamps of Great Britain (and also other Commonwealth countries) have been based on the images of the Queen given to us by Dorothy Wilding, the noted English society photographer from Gloucester, and after 1967 by the sculptor and ceramicist Arnold Machin's bas-relief clay efigy of the Queen which was also used on all post decimal coinage until 1984.

Speaking without notes, Mark gave us a detailed account of the careers of both artists and shone a light onto the history of items which we all use regularly whose design deserves the attention we gave to it today through Mark's expert direction.
