Richard Fletcher, who is a retired RAF officer and former town councillor, was a member of the committee which established a memorial to Bill Tutte, a Newmarket man who became one of the Bletchley Park codebreakers in World War 2, in the High Street in 2014.
“Bill Tutte, born in Newmarket in humble circumstances, achieved one of the greatest intellectual achievements of the Second World War when at Bletchley Park he broke the Nazi’s Lorenz code without assistance or ever having seen a Lorenz machine. Hugely more complex than Enigma, the Lorenz code was considered unbreakable by Hitler. General Eisenhower himself acknowledged that Tutte had shortened the war in Europe by 2 years.”
