Donkeys and Donkey Lovers Defy Deluge
The 19th annual Donkey Derby in Burnham Park, organised by the Rotary Club of Burnham Beeches on Bank Holiday Saturday, was hit by a six hour deluge. Just as the marquees were going up and the exhibitors and stall-holders were setting out their stalls down it came! However, the true British and donkey-loving spirit shone through. There was a pause in the rain after 3 o'clock for the some 2,000 visitors to enjoy the races, possibly win a bet and have some outdoor food and refreshment.
The Annabelle Watson dancers, young people in what appeared to be swimwear and summer clothing, enchanted the crowd under their umbrellas as they performed to "I do like to be beside the seaside" as the rain came in sideways!
The Burnham Gymnasts found the going too wet and retired to Burnham Upper School for their display. But the donkeys kept going and so did the hundreds of children who wanted a ride on one, never mind the weather!
