At their recent meeting at the town's George Hotel, members of Penrith Rotary Club had their heads in the clouds as Mark Crompton gave them a cockpit eye view of the thrills enjoyed by the Eden Soaring and Gliding Club based at Skelling Farm, Skirwith.

Established in 2008 it now has over 30 members with more than half flying members. Because of the excellent flying conditions on the side of the Pennines, and with Cross Fell as a backdrop, flyers come from far and wide in the season from May to October.

Take off is an adventure in itself. With a huge winch powering a 3000ft cable, the glider accelerates from 0-40mph in 3 seconds and is airborne after about 1000 feet.
