Rotary Club of Bishop's Stortford presents a cheque to Mercy Ships.

On Monday 27th June the Rotary Club of Bishop's Stortford heard about the current work of Mercy Ships from Funding Co-ordinator Jane Palmer when she spoke at the lunch meeting at Bishop's Stortford Golf Club. Following the talk, President Rick Waterhouse presented a cheque for £500 to Jane to go towards the work of the charity.

Members heard that the Mercy Ships charity provides free surgery and medical care, and partners with local communities to improve health care, offering training and advice, materials and hands-on assistance. It is a global charity and has operated a fleet of hospital ships in developing nations since 1978. Currently, it is operating off the coast of West Africa. The latest addition to the fleet is Africa Mercy that was deployed in 2007 at a cost in the region of £30m. With her increased health care and development capacity, she is dedicated to bringing continued hope and healing to the people of Africa. This vessel overtakes the Anastasis as the world's largest non-governmental hospital ship, with six operating theatres, a 78-bed patient ward and accommodation. The 450+ volunteer surgeons and crew bring life saving operations to sme of the poorest people on earth. Hair lips, facial growths, blindness are just some of the conditions treated by these marvellous people.
