Trailers walk -Tong / Fulneck

Tue, Sep 27th 2011 at 12:00 am - 2:00 am

Meet at 9.45 leave at 10.15. Lunch around the Greyhound Inn Tong.
Please could you let me know if you are walking, lunching or both in reasonable time for booking.

The walk on Tuesday 27th September will start at the Greyhound Inn at Tong. Incidentally, I believe that Tong means "a spit of land".

Meet around 9.45 for coffee in the pub car park, we may leave our cars there. We will set off when assembled around 10.15am.

The walk will start in Tong village on the ridge and quickly drop down to the valley across to Fulneck via the golf course crossing Pudsey Beck. It will be around 6 miles. Fulneck is the birth place of Sir Len Hutton and we will pass a blue plaque dedicated to his presence (see picture).

We then walk through the Moravian settlement of Fulneck. The Moravians originated in Bohemia in the the15thcentury and spread to Moravia in the 18th century. Missionaries arrived in England with a view to travelling to America and were met by Benjamin Ingham a Church of England clergyman. In 1744 Benjamin Ingham presented the Moravians with a 22 acre estate as a centre for their Yorkshire operations. Initially named Lambshill it was renamed Fulneck after a town in Moravia. The settlement was built, including a chapel, bakery, a boy's school and a girl's school which are still in use today as the fee paying Fulneck School. The settlement was visited by John Wesley in 1780. There is a small museum in the settlement.

Continuing on, past a miniature railway then circling back crossing the valley to the Greyhound Inn. Which is a 17thcentury building with beamed ceilings containing our lunch and drink. Lunch scheduled for around 1pm.

Directions: take the A650 from Bradford to Wakefield. At the small roundabout which meets Drighlington by pass take the first exit for the B6135. After a short distance take the first turn left onto Tong Lane. The Greyhound is on the left in the village. BD4 0RR.
