News update from President Kathleen - November 2011

President's Letter

The Rotary Club of St. Andrews

November/December 2011

Hello Everyone!

As a Club we are trying to move into "the age of technology" with the help of the Communication and Website committee (Roy McLachlan, Colin Mitchell, Ian Jones, John Black and Karen Robson) who are all doing an excellent job of trying to get all our members to use the Rotary Club of St. Andrews website.

For those of you who would like to check it out, you will find a lot of up-to-date information on what the Club is doing, all the events past and present and advertising those still to come.  So because of this we don't really need our Bulletin or "Star" any more as you will find everything on the web.  But for those of you who would still prefer the written word, I thought I would jot some things down for you to read and keep you up to date with what is happening and what our Rotary Club is doing.

As usual we have had a busy year so far.  We had the arrival of four Ambassadorial Scholars who are here studying at University for a year.  They were welcomed in September with a lunch and then a tour of St. Andrews of all the historic sights.   Bette Hunter, one of our members, is a tour guide and so they were given the full tour experience of our wonderful town. We have Diego, who comes from Mexico and is being hosted by Andrew and Elizabeth Johnston, Zac, from Dayton, Ohio, being hosted by Jerry Beaulier and Linda-Anne, Jordan who comes from Athens in Texas and is being hosted by Cameron and Pearl Harrison and then Kilrymont Club are hosting Robbie who comes from Hawaii.

They are a great bunch of young people eager to help in the club in whatever waythey can.  They were at the Byre selling cards and Raffle tickets, helped at the Winter Treat and Christmas card sale in the Town Hall, which Rotary now organises.  We look forward to the rest of the year with them and no doubt you will hear one of them speak if you come to our meeting on March 14th next year (Joint Rotary and Inner Wheel Lunch).

Speaking of young people, Colin Mitchell has managed to get our Rotaract Club going with about 18 students who come from many different countries.   They are hoping to raise money for a  Scottish- run Day Care Centre in Romania.  They had a stall at the recent St. Andrews Festival celebrations in the town.  Our club also provided a Mulled Wine Stall at the same event raising
