To mark the 75th anniversary of the formation of the first Rotary Club in Chicago in 1905. all Rotary clubs were asked to launch commemorative projects in 1980. In 1979, the Wigton Club set itself the ambitious task of raising a capital sum of £5,000. Established as a Trust, the income would be used to finance overseas travel scholarships as an aid to young people between the ages of 17 and 24, who sought to widen their educational and/or vocational skills by undertaking projects approved by the Trustees. The first meeting of the Trustees took place on June 18th, 1981 to confirm the procedures by which candidates would be selected.

Since 1981 sixty five applicants have been supported by grants to aid their travelling costs to destinations in 35 countries around the world, a total of over £13,000 has been distributed as of January 2016.
