Spectacle collections in Helmsley and Kirkbymoorside

Moors Gateway Rotary makes a regular collection of used spectacles form Helmsley Opticians and Towlers Chemist in Kirkbymoorside. These are sent to the Rotary Club of York Ainsty for sorting.

Every month, for over 20 years, the members of the York Ainsty club have gathered together in Copmanthorpe to sort through a huge pile of spectacles.

The spectacles have been donated by people throughout Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire and channelled through Rotary Clubs to the home of Ruth and Colin Perrott.

Here members pick over the spectacles to find types that are capable of being reused by Ruth to give to people in Africa. Ruth, an Optometrist with practices in Acomb and West Yorkshire, has travelled to Africa since 1991 together with other Optometrists to seek out people in remote locations who have no other means of getting eye-care.

In 2014 the club opened a second Specsort to include volunteers from the communities of Copmanthorpe and Poppleton.
