Purple Crocus in Ullswater Road, Penrith

Motorists driving along Ullswater Road, Penrith cannot help but see a large patch of purple crocus on the central grass reservation between the two carriageways. They may be interested to learn these delicate flowers represent a global effort, led by Rotary, to rid the world of the crippling disease of Polio. What is more, local people have contributed to this aim by supporting Rotary events over the years. The Penrith Club tends to concentrate on charities and needs closer to home, but in recognition that within living memory polio also ravaged this area, a small proportion of their charitable funds support this global cause. These purple flowers represent the colour of ink dabbed on a child
