2013 - Rotarians visit Parliament

Visit and Guided Tour

Forty-nine members and guests travelled to London on 12th April for a tour of the Houses of Parliament organised by Rtn Mohammad Haroon.

The tour started in the spectacular Westminster Hall - one of the largest undivided mediaeval spaces. Here the group was split into three groups. Our guide was a recently retired Parliamentary Estates Architect and his intimate knowledge of the buildings provided an unrivalled insight.

We were conducted through the magnificent St Stephens Hall into the Central Lobby and the Robing Room before entering the Lords and Commons chambers. The guides provided a detailed history of each room and its function, liberally sprinkled with anecdotes. Andrew Griffiths, the Member of Parliament for Burton, accompanied the tour moving around the groups adding his perspective.

The visit concluded with afternoon tea in a visitor's dining room where we witnessed Andrew being inducted as an Honorary Member of Burton Rotary Club by SVP William.

Naturally, we then moved to the Terrace for another group photograph on the banks of the Thames with the Gothic structure of Parliament on one side, the London Eye on the other and the 'Shard' in the distance.

A really memorable day and a huge thanks to Mohammad Haroon for perfect organisation. His knowledge of nearby eating facilities also proved very valuable! Also, thanks to Andrew Griffiths for all his support during the visit and for sharing with us his experiences of Parliamentary life.
