The Challenge continues, the 2 mad Rotarians, John Mellor and Tim Cook are now well into their Jubilee Cornish Coastal Footpath Walk. Day 7 was from Porthcothnan to Fern Pit Ferry, Newquay. Club member Jenny Jones walked with us today and it was good again to have a third person walking with us. The day started cloudy at Porthcothnan and the beach was empty, the terrain was very similar to the section from Padstow into Porthcothnan. By the time we got to Bedruthan Steps the sun had come out but there was a lot of activity in the air with planes coming and going from Newquay Airport between Bedrutha Steps and Mawgan Porth. The flowers on the cliffs were as spectacular as they had been over the previous days, the bird life was just as varied today we saw a hovering Kestrel, several Stonechats and Kittiwakes at Towan Head, Newquay. With it not been to clear today the views along the coast were not as spectacular as they had been as it was a bit hazy. We passed a number of other walkers on the SWCP and when we got to Bedruthan Steps there were a considerable number of people out with cameras taking shots of the rocks that form the steps. We met Liz and Suki at Watergate Bay before we walked on into Newquay by the time we arrived the sun had gone in.
Day 8 Fern Pit Ferry, Crantock to Perranporth, As we were without our normal back up crew today I would like to thank club member David Crocker for helping us out. Today was one of the shorter days but it was just as well as we arrived in Perranporth just before it started to rain. An interesting walk going past stretches sand, old mine shafts, strange objects on MOD land and vast areas of spring flowers. All the beaches had people surfing as it was nice and sunny at the start of the day. Today we saw a pair of kestrels at Crantock and amongst the flora saw some Yellow Rattle. Had lunch at the northern end of Perran Beach looking down its full length and then walked it and just beat the tide in the process, better views today as we could see north to Trevose Head and South to St Agnes Beacon the path we would be walking soon. It was good to be met at Perranporth by Bill, President Perranzabuloe Rotary Club, and his wife with tea and cakes.
Day 9 Perranporth to Portreath. The third wet day of the walk only cleared up about an hour before we arrived at Portreath. We were without our normal back up crew today so thanks go to club member Tony Britton for helping us out. The rain meant the views were none existent as we walked through disused mines and spoil heaps. Despite the weather the restored buildings at Wheal Coates were as spectacular as ever and the lifeguards were out as people where in the sea surfing. We had lunch in Porthtowan in the dry unfortunately as we moved off it started again and only stopped raining as we passed RAF Portreath. The section between Porthtowan and Portreath had the 2 hardest descents and ascents of the day including
