Update on 'End Polio Now' September 2015
THE END OF POLIO CAMPAIGN UPDATE SEPTEMBER 2015
ANOTHER MILESTONE IN THE IRRADICATION OF POLIO.
There have been no new cases of the wild polio virus in Nigeria for twelve months so that country is no longer considered endemic. Another two years free of new cases is required before it may be considered polio free, but it is on the way.
There are now just two countries where polio is endemic -----Afghanistan and Pakistan; between them there have been forty new cases this year, so the fight goes on.
Pakistan is currently undertaking the mass immunisation of 35 million children using the services 20,000 workers.
Amongst that good news there is disappointment from Ukraine, where some new cases have been found.
The World Health Organisation is organising a mass immunisation project to contain the out break, and hopefully will be fully successful.
