The ROSE Project

The ROSE (Realistic Opportunities for Supported Employment) Programme is an excellent example of a creative approach to the transition of people with learning difficulties and/or disabilities into real, sustainable paid employment.

The programme recognises that for most people with learning difficulties, paid employment is one of the main goals in adult life. Employment is a vital part of social inclusion and the benefits are much more than just financial. Being in employment helps to build self-esteem, confidence and independence. Sadly, for many people with learning difficulties and/or disabilities their transition into the world of work is all too often a frustrating and de-motivating experience. People can wait several months between training courses and supported employment, by which time much learning has been lost.

The aim of the ROSE Programme is to, with the support of parents/guardians and staff, secure paid work placements for clients with learning disabilities. The support of a Job Coach, is made available to support clients for as long as necessary to become an independent employee. This service is individually tailored to the client but also supports the employer, so that the working relationship is a fruitful one for all concerned.

The ROSE Programme is based at Havering College and was set up in 2006 by two members of staff who have children with learning difficulties. Since its inception, the ROSE Programme has received widespread recognition for its success in transforming the lives of its clients. The Programme has been praised by Ofsted and in the House of Commons, the House of Lords and at the Thames Gateway Business Awards. It has also been featured in The Guardian.
