Alex Blair, district governor of Rotary District 1230 (with 51 clubs covering the whole of the west of Scotland) visited the Strathaven club on 14 August, bringing with him the greetings and best wishes of Rotary International President Sakuji Tanaka. "Sakuji is a very charming man, but also a very practical one", said Alex. "Sakuji's theme for his year as president of the world-wide movement may sound a bit strange at first hearing, but 'Peace Through Service' is meant to be a very practical proposition indeed. Sakuji offers every club in the world the same challenge - to develop a peace project, local or international, large or small, that is designed to promote wellbeing and human harmony in some way."
Alex noted that some clubs in the west of Scotland were already responding; one was promoting an antisectarian initiative among local schools, while another was involved in trying to improve village conditions in Malawi. He paid tribute to the impressive range of activity the Strathaven was already involved in, locally as well as internationally, but urged the club to think about what more might be done to enlist the support of the Strathaven community to pursue peace through service during this coming year.
