3^rd September 2012 - RYLA (Rotary Youth Leadership Awards)

The club hosted its annual youth presentation night in September when Northallerton College students Hayley Stephenson, Lucy Clarkson, Lois Ancell and Fergus Roberts were guests. Hayley, Lucy and Lois took part in the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards activities week at Hebden Hey outward-bound centre in West Yorkshire and gave a polished presentation about their experiences. They faced a daunting test of leadership skills such as building a zipwire to cross a gorge. Other activities included bridge-building, kayaking and organising a talent show. All three spoke eloquently about how they had enjoyed being tested to their limits and how the course had boosted their self-confidence. During the week, students raised £522 for the Laura Crane Trust. Fergus was nominated by the club to carry the Olympic torch and enjoyed his moment of glory in Redcar on June 2013. A former national junior cross-country champion and talented triathlete, Fergus said how proud he was to take part in such a memorable event. The students were thanked by President Sue Adsett.

International Committee  - Charities supported in 2012/13

In 2012/13 Rotary year the Club International Committee chose two charities as the focus for fundraising.  The theme for the year was India and the Committee promoted the Gian Foundation which assists mainly blind and orphaned children by sponsoring their education, and the Lourdes Hospital which is run on charitable lines for the poor in the home town of one of our members in India.

On 29th October 2012 members, guests and friends assembled at the Red Chilli on High Street, Northallerton and enjoyed a banquet of popadoms and pickles, various starters and a range of curry dishes, rices and naans. It was a superb evening and thanks must go to Rahman and his staff for making the event possible.

At the Club meeting on Monday 12th November members heard presentations from the chosen charities.

Firstly Yashpal Anand supported by his wife Gillian spoke about the Gian Foundation which provides educational support to mainly blind and orphaned children, many in India. A donation of £40 can provide the necessary books and equipment for a child for a year.

Then Club member Muttu Puranik informed members about the Lourdes Hospital in his home town in India and the support needed.

At the end of the evening President Sue Adsett presented a cheque to Yashpal for £232 which was the proceeds from the Curry Night. Pictures L to R are Gillian Anand, Yashpal Anand and Club President Sue Adsett.
