Wheels 2012 organisers and 2012/2013 Rotary Club President, Ken Metcalfe, undertook to donate around 50% of the net profit (i.e. proceeds less expenses) from this year's event at the Royal Cornwall Showground to the nominated main charity - Cornwall Hospice Care. That promise was duly delivered when Tamsyn Cocks and Hazel Rowe were invited by the Wadebridge Club to join them for supper in the Cygnet Function Room at the Swan Hotel on Thursday 9 August. In traditional style, a BIG CHEQUE had been prepared (along with a smaller version that really mattered) for the magnificent sum of £6,000. Further donations to other beneficiaries will be made in due course.
Ken Metcalfe presented the cheque on behalf of the Club to Tamsyn and Hazel, who were quite astonished at the success of Wheels 2012 and the generosity of the exhibitors, the paying public, the stallholders; not to mention the huge amount of work put into the event by Wheels 2012 Chairman, Clive Robinson, his committee and the entire Club membership.
Tamsyn Cocks told the Club: "With our two sites, Mount Edgcumbe, St Austell and St Julia's Hayle we provide around 6500 bed days in a year. Just 13% of our income comes from Government so we have to find the balance (approx. £6.75m) through voluntary raised income, somewhere around £12.80 per minute! So the Rotary Club's support, from income generated from Wheels 2012, is extremely welcome in helping us towards our targets. Our major current project, which involves the refurbishment of Mount Edgcumbe which is now 30 years old, is estimated to cost £600,000."
Wadebridge Rotary Club President, Ken Metcalfe, said in reply: "Through the success of Wheels 2012, we are delighted to be able to make a donation to Cornwall Hospice Care and it is so good to hear something of the work of both Mount Edgcumbe and St Julia's from Tamsyn and Hazel this evening. We thank them both for their time."
