Rotary Rides to the Rescue!
Wadebridge Rotary Club enables riders from local RDA group to attend their National Championships
Rotary Rides to the Rescue!
The Riding for the Disabled (RDA) National Championships, held at Hartpury College in Gloucestershire, is RDA's flagship event, bringing together hundreds of competitors of all abilities in events including Dressage, Countryside Challenge, Vaulting, Horse Care & Knowledge, Arts & Crafts, Best Turned Out and Musical Ride. North Cornwall RDA had riders who had been selected to compete in this event and needed funds to help with their transport costs for the event, held over the weekend of 12/13 July.
Wadebridge Rotary Club - a recent supporter of the North Cornwall Branch of the RDA helping towards the cost of a much needed rider hoist - was approached, once again, through the Club's Community & Vocational Committee Chairman, Tim Jones, to see if the Rotary Club could possibly find any more funds to support this great venture. Tim took his well prepared case to the Rotary Club's decision-making group (Council) in last month and a further sum of £250 was duly agreed and passed to North Cornwall RDA (picture of Tim Jones presenting the cheque to RDA, North Cornwall Branch, Chairman, Jill Smith) helping to ensure proper transport was supplied and those from Lakefield Equestrian Centre were able to compete.
The Championships have grown year on year and is now bigger than the Paralympics and Para World Championships combined. In previous years it has proved a springboard for the Paralympics, with many of the current Team GB having competed at The Championships.
Riding for the Disabled Association (RDA) is celebrating the announcement of the Paralympics GB team for para-equestrian dressage. Of the five riders chosen to represent Great Britain, four started their equestrian careers with the support of RDA.
As Tim Jones said, when handing over the Club's cheque: "Wadebridge Rotary Club is very proud to be associated with the RDA and especially the North Cornwall Branch, based at Lakefield Equestrian Centre outside Camelford. We wish the riders every success at the Championships later in the month and we look forward to maintaining our link with you all."
