Spectacles Collection

Old spectacles find a new use

Spectacles Collection

Vision Aid Overseas (VAO) is a UK based international charity which operates in at least seven African countries. Its mission is to fight poverty by transforming access to eye care. Approx. 10% of the world's population suffer from poor vision and has no access to spectacles.
We are one of many Rotary Clubs around the world who have been, for many years, regularly collecting old spectacles from individuals and opticians and sending them off to the central sorting point where they are then shipped on to VAO's overseas stations. Although we are only one cog in a very large wheel it is very satisfying to know that the 1,500 plus pairs of spectacles that we collect each year help disadvantaged people in many underdeveloped countries.
