CURRENT PROJECTS IN WHICH WE ARE INVOLVED INCLUDE:

Support for the Scotswood Natural Community Garden

In October 2013 we were pleased to have been able to support the work of the Scotswood Natural Community Garden among young people in the City by awarding a grant of £500 to enable equipment to be provided for participants in their first Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme programme. Since then we have funded a part-time youth worker for one school term and in 2016 we contributed £1,000 toward the transport costs of a group of young people on a sail training exercise in Scotland.

Support for the Shelterbox Project

The Rotary Club of Newcastle upon Tyne has, in recent years, funded twenty-five Shelterboxes that have been sent to area affected by didasters in various parts of the world, providing relief for 250 people.

Polio Plus Campaign

Our Club is participating in the "Purple4Polio" Campaign , which is part of the Rotary Programme for the Eradication of Polio. We have purchased 5000 purple crocus corms for planting this autumn.

Thanks to Janet Fay who has received the corms, contact has been made with West Jesmond Primary School who have indicated they would be delighted to plant some purple crocus bulbs in garden areas both in school and in St Andrews Cemetary. They have a group of children who form an ecogroup and they could plant the bulbs as part of their continuous work to enhance their school grounds and the local area.

Macmillan Cancer Care

Macmillan Cancer Care is main charity that our President, Jo Robertson, has chosen for her year of office.

We have already participated in three store collection in and around Newcastle, which have raised £3,200. In October, Rotarian Harold Robson sucessfully completed his second Zip-wire slide in less than a year over the River Tyne. His efforts are in aid of Macmillan and donations may be made via our Club Treasurer.
