Rotary supports project to send bicycles to The Gambia

Rotarians support JOLE RIDER project in The Gambia

Local Rotarians from Rhos on Sea and Llanfairfechan / Penmaemawr clubs recently took part in a project to supply bicycles to help children in The Gambia get to school. It is typical for children to have to walk 5 miles each way to get to school. The JOLE RIDER charity collects bicycles throughout UK, some of which are refurbished in local prisons before shipping to Africa.

Rotarians Pauline Hogan and Georgina Llewellyn travelled to Tetbury, Wiltshire recently and helped in refurbishing and loading the bicycles into a container to be shipped to the Gambia. They will be travelling out to The Gambia in March, at their own expense, to see the bicycles unloaded and learn more about how the project works.

A total of 390 bicycles were loaded into the container together with a wind turbine and batteries, and also sewing machines and books for the children

Jole Rider recently sent some volunteers out to The Gambia to train local people to refurbish the bicycles, providing much needed employment opportunities.

Anyone who has a bike to donate should contact their local Rotary club
