Bomber Memorial Walk 2013
On 5th June, the Rotary Club of Horwich held their annual service of remembrance for the aircrew of the Wellington Bomber which crashed near this spot on 12 November 1943.
They were joined by members of The inner Wheel Club of Horwich and 9 members of 1471 (Horwich) Air training Corps.
The aircraft, piloted by Flight Sergeant Timperon of the Royal Australian Air Force, was on a training flight from RAF Wymeswold, Leicesterhsire. All six crew members lost their lives and their names are inscribed on this memoral which was built by the Rotary Club of Horwich as their project for the 50th Anniversary of the founding of Rotary, the idea of George Brooks.
It was unveiled in June 1955 by Wing Commander Dias OBE DFC and dedicated by the President of Rotary GB&I Revd. David Dick who was Moderator of the Church of Scotland. Squadron Leader Hurditch of the Royal Australian Air Force represented the Australian High Commission.
