Tree planting to commemorate WW1 at Trefusis Park, Redruth

Saturday 5th April 2014 saw a group of Redruth Rotarians helped by members of 77 (Redruth) Squadron ATC struggle in damp and windy conditions plant 30 saplings at Trefusis Park, Redruth.

In August of that year it was 100 years since the outbreak of WW1 during which a total number of military and civilian casualties totalled 37 million of which 17million were killed. This total included 7 million civilians and 10 million military.

The trees that were supplied free by the Woodland Trust included Rowan, Silver Birch and Wild Cherry will eventually form a small copse giving year round colour to commemorate all those that were involved in the war.

Later in the year on the 27th July a commemoration service was held at the park to which all members of the public were invited to attend.

Since then members have maintained the trees and have also planted crocuses around the trees to highlight Rotary's campain to eradicate polio.

The Cormac staff from Cornwall Council who help to maintain the parks are to be thanked for all their help over the last year to enable this community scheme to be fulfilled.
