Lostwithiel Rotary Toy Shop

Fri, Aug 15th 2014 at 10:00 am- Sun, Dec 14th 2014 - 5:00 pm

Following a very kind donation of new high quality toys, the Rotary Club of Lostwithiel opened Toy Shops in Lostwithiel, Bodmin and Par Market for a few days only, with £16,000 going to charity (over £21,000 with matched funding)

And what of the money we raised?

Well, How Did We Do?

We asked Martin Austen on 15 Dec 14 how everything was going.  He replied:
"With the proceeds from Saturday's and Sunday's Par Market sales, we have taken around £16,000 in total.  Then, using selected matched funding, we have been able to increase this to over £21,000.  This is beyond our wildest expectations!"
"Thank you most sincerely to our secret sponsors who donated the toys completely free of charge.  Thank you to the kind gentleman who let us have use of the shop in Bodmin at no cost to us.  Thank you to the lovely lady who allowed us to use the shop in Lostwithiel for virtually nothing.  Thank you to Cornish Market World who gave us a free stall for the weekend.  Thank you to the members of the Rotary Club of Lostwithiel who gave of their time so generously to sell all the toys.  And, finally, thank you to everyone in the local area who bought any of our stuff."
"We have already spent nearly £10,000 and we are open to suggestions as to what we should do with the rest.  So far, we have allocated:
"Thank you everyone for all your support.  We are very grateful for all that you have done."

They really are incredible - thank you so much to everyone at the Rotary Club.  It's wonderful that we're going to be able to provide such an inspiring place for children to play in, thanks to these wonderful toys.

Oh my word, they look incredible!!!!! What lucky children, it's looking very promising that parents/grandparents/carers will actually get to sing, with such wonderful distractions for the kids!!

Who said you can't sell toys in the summer!

The Toy Shop project is managed by a committee consisting of Mike Sharpe, Geoffrey Phipps, Walter Gubbins and Martin Austen.  We asked Martin in September how it had gone:

"The total sales so far across both shops are £12,124.30 and that has been achieved as a result of a terrific club effort with nearly all members helping in some way.  There is still a considerable amount of stock left and the committee are looking to open the Toy Shop again in Lostwithiel for Christmas sales, probably at the tail end of November and the beginning of December."

While there is no hurry to disburse the money raised, the committee have asked club members to submit bids for worthwhile projects and the bids so far reflect the members' wishes to help children and young people, both home and abroad, including Rotary's own project to eliminate Polio.  The committee will have a tough job deciding where the money should go, which will then be ratified by the whole club.

Reflecting on what the club had achieved, Martin concluded:

"Much against many people's expectations, it turned out that August was a good month to sell toys."
